African Stories in Yorkshire Project Event
WISE, Oriel Chambers, 27 High St, Hull
19 February 2016
19 February 2016
We had an excellent turnout and response following the Africans in Yorkshire Project event at the Wilberforce Institute (WISE) - not a spare seat in sight! A few people afterwards have decided to work on researching African presence in the Armed Forces partly because of their curiosity in the absence of Black servicemen in War films. Locally we know about US servicemen in Cottingham but what of Leconfield, Driffield and Pocklington?
There has been some contact also from people who want to contribute their own story into the oral histories collection. We have several paintings in our local museums showing Black presence - a surprise to many of us present; it's amazing what you see when you look properly! The event was a great way to fire curiosities and galvanise people into action to start the search to expose this aspect of our local history which will feed into the national picture. To the right is Martin Spafford showing one of many pictures evidencing African presence through history in paintings and illustrations. Excellent contributions also from the other speakers: Audrey Dewjee, Professor John Oldfield, Dr Nick Evans and Martin Taylor. |
