Theodore Campbell was born on 5 June 1896 in Sierra Leone. It is likely that he travelled to Britain during the latter part of the First World War. However, there is no evidence to suggest he worked on board a ship during the conflict. In November 1918, he was employed on board the Kinsale as a fireman. After the West African sailor had been discharged from this vessel at Hull, he joined the Oristano in January 1919 and ventured across the Atlantic to New York. On his return to Hull he was employed on board the Great City in April 1919 and travelled to Gibraltar with a cargo of coal before returning to the port and gaining employment on the Jervaulx Abbey which was moored at the Town Dock in November 1919.[1] Between 1920 and 1924 Campbell continued in his career as fireman on at least three other vessels, however it remains unknown whether he came back to Hull after 1919.
